Late Season Flint Lock

The 2009 late season flint lock season was the year i harvested my first deer with a flint lock. I was hunting with my buddie Mike. We were walking out this hill side and he was on the bench above me when i heard his shoot so i stood for a while before starting to walk again. I was looking at the tracks in the snow when i seen a real fresh track going down the hill so i looked up and there was a deer standing there broad side. I have missed a few deer before with my flint lock so right before i started to act a thought went through my head that my dad said he thought he could it better with a flint lock off hand instead of with a rest. So i thought to myself i have to try this shot off hand. So i pulled back the hammer and raised the gun into my shoulder. Taking a steady aim i took the shot and when the smoke cleared there was a dead deer laying there and it felt great. After missing a doe FOUR TIMES earlier that season at 50 yards with a rest off my knee i had to step if off to see how far this deer was. It was 84 steps! and it built my confidenceup! That hunting season I shot my first bear so i was trying really hard to kill a buck and by the last day of the late season flint i still had my buck tag. I was out hunting with one of my good buddies Glenn on that last day and we were doing some small 2 man drives and we saved the best drive for last. In the late season flint lock you can harvest a doe and tag it with your buck tag. On the last drive Glenn drove at least 20 deer buy me and i could not see a single horn so i picked out a big doe, cocked the hammer back and took aim. After the shot we had a not so short track job and a few more shots before recovering the the deer but at the end of the night we were eating freshly fried deer heart!

My First Bear

The bear season of 2009 was my 7th year of hunting bears and my best. I ended up seeing 3 different bears and finally shooting my first bear. It was the third bear i seen, on the second day, November 24th. I drove the first drive of the day. It was raining and i was soaked. We didnt get any bears up in that drive but i did see some crazy buck sign in the luarel. I was posting the next drive so i put on some dry clothes on the ride to the next spot. We had a long walk down a gas line, and then cut into the left where two different hollow ran up to the gas line. Iwas sitting in one of the hollows and and i could see the other side so good, i felt like this was going to be the spot i could see so much. As i was sitting there some other guy not from our crew came down and sat in the bottom of the hollow and that made me mad then the fog moved in and i couldnt see the other side of the hollow. I said to my self a bear is going to have to come up out on my side of the hollow for me to be able to see it. I could hear the drives coming and the guy that was sitting in the bottom move up out for some reason. I knew the drives were about to the end and all the sudden i heard something right below me and i was lookin down in the fog and i could see something and i was coming right at me. I couldn’t believe it, it was a bear! After that the instintct took affect. I dont remember taking the safty off but i remember seeing the bear in the scope and seeing the cross airs on the bear and then hearing the crack of the rifle. I seen the bear drop in my scope and then i got the shacks. The shacks that have been saving up for 7 years! It was so exciting im shaking now just writing the story. I waited 7 years for the fast 5 seconds that it happened, but it was all worth it! Ill wait for another 7 for it to happen again. It was a 195 pound female bear. Im just happy that guy in the bottom moved out before the bear came running up.

2010 Archery Season

Most of my blogs are going to be about my outdoors experiences. This is my first blog so I’m going to talk about my most recent ones during the 2010 archery season. This isnt a formal thing so im going to write like i was telling you the story.

I had a pretty good Archery season this year. I shot a doe the first Friday of the season and after that i had some pretty awesome encounter with bucks. The first shooter buck i seen i was sitting along a field and there were some does out in the field eating clover. All of the sudden i seen a bucks head sticking out of the brush on the other side of the field. He stood there awhile before coming out and feeding under a apple tree about 50 yards away. After he was done with the apples he turned and started up the hill towards the does, so i grabbed my grunt call and grunted at him, but he paid not attention so i grunted even louder at him and he turn around, stood the hair up on his back and started that stiff legged walk that most of you bow hunters probably know.  He came in to about 25 yards i could see he was about a 15 inch wide a 8 pointer and it was to early in the season to take him but it felt good to see him. All of the sudden he turned and started going to my left and i looked back that way and there was a big buck standing there in the field. I thought they were going to fight they both had the hair standing up on their backs and where walking circles around each other with their ears back. After a little of that they turned and came right in to me like they decided they were buddies. I had the smaller buck at15 yards broadside, i could have shot him easily, but the big buck was 25 yards standing straight on at me and i didn’t want to shoot him in the chest. You can kill a deer by shooting them straight on in the chest, i know people that have done it, but i don’t recommend it. This buck was a 8 pointer about 19 inches wide. Both bucks turned and headed up the hill toward the does with out me being able to get a shot.

I had a encounter with that big buck a few times before season. I filmed him one night in velvet from my tree stand. That wouldn’t be my last encounter with him. I seen a nice 10 point one day walking back from my stand. I was sneaking along the ridge line looking down over and i seen him standing with a doe i watched him for about a hour, i tried everything to get him to come in but he wasn’t leaving that doe. They finally wondered off only getting as close as 97 yards.

I did shoot a buck on November 3rd it was a nice 8 point about 14 inches wide i was running out of time and i am a bow hunter at heart. i rather shoot a deer with a bow any day before i would with a rifle. This was my 6th buck and my 5th buck with a bow. I was happy with him. It was about 20 minutes before dark and i could hear a buck chasing a doe behind me so i started grunting and then i could hear something in the woods across the field from me, so i bleated and this buck come out and came right in to 18 yards and started feeding under a apple tree. Maybe he came out cause i was grunting and maybe not but he did and i made a good shot and watched him go down.

On the last day of the 2010 archery season i took my girlfriend out hunting she was using her dads cross bow. It was a good walk to my ground blind so i drove her up on the fourwheeler and put her and all our gear in the blind and then drove the fourwheeler about a 100 yards away and parked it and walked back up and got in the blind. We were not in there for 2 minuts when i said we have to switch seats so she will have a better shot. So we just started to get up when i looked out and there stood that 19 inch 8 pointer i had the encounters with earlyer in the season. he was standing there 30 yards away. I think he seen use move or heard something he didnt like, he stood there for awhile then turned around and walked back into the woods, but i said he wasnt spooked he will come back out. After he left about 2 minutes later we looked down the field and there was a pinto buck standing there. It was all white except for its brown head. It walked down in the woods behind us and pretty soon that wide 8 point came out and followed him down into the woods and that was the last deer we see that night ending the archery season.
